On Tuesday June 17th, 2008 the call came at 9:00am that they had a new liver for Michayla. They had to be at Vanderbilt at 12:00am. The surgery bagan at 5:00pm. The transplant team came out of the operating room with smiles on their faces. Eight days later Michayla left the hospital to go to the Ronald McDonald House where they spent about a month. On July 28th Michayla got the OK to return home. She still has a pic line to administer antibiotics for her virus. If all goes well she will be allowed to return to school this year.

With the cost of a transplant often exceeding $500,000, many transplant patients are unable to shoulder the financial burden of such a procedure. The Children's Organ Transplant Association (COTA) is a national charity dedicated to organizing and guiding communities in raising funds for transplant-needy patients. In Lebanon, volunteers are raising funds for transplant patients like local child Michayla Nelson.
Born on January 29, 2001, Michayla was diagnosed with a rare liver cancer called Hepatoblastomia in August 2001. She was later diagnosed with Cirrhosis of the liver, and doctors at Vanderbilt Children's Hospital in Nashville, Tennessee, performed a life-saving liver transplant on June 17, 2008. An estimated $35,000 is being raised by Lebanon volunteers.
